Aggie Muster 2018

April 2, 2018 by New Student and Family Programs

Aggie Muster is a tradition unique to Texas A&M University that embodies and perpetuates the Aggie Spirit. Celebrated on April 21st every year, Muster engages thousands of Aggies worldwide to honor and celebrate the Aggie Family – past, present, and future. It is famously quoted “If there is an A&M man in one hundred miles of you, you are expected to get together, eat a little, and live over the days you spent at the A&M College of Texas.” Although over a century has passed and thousands of Musters have been held, the roots remain the same of honoring the Aggies who have passed and celebrating those gathered together.

For more information about a Muster ceremony near you, visit aggienetwork.com/muster.

On-Campus Events:
Reflections Display
In order to more fully recognize and honor the lives of our Student Campus Muster Roll Call honorees, personal items will be displayed as a living memorial in the Muster Reflections Display. Family members of campus honorees submit photographs, letters, stories, Aggie Rings, or other personal items that reflect on their loved one’s life and what mattered most to them. It is our hope that we, as Aggies, can create an opportunity for these families to display their favorite things about their honoree and celebrate them by using these items to exhibit who their loved one was, what they did, and how they touched the lives of those around them.

Reflections Display items will be displayed in the Memorial Student Center Flag Room from Monday, April 16th to Friday, April 20th, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Saturday, April 21st from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Money Management Resources

March 2, 2018 by New Student and Family Programs

How can the Money Education Center help my student?

The Money Education (ME) Center provides Aggie students with the education and resources they need to make smarter personal finance decisions during college so that they can lay a foundation of financial success for a lifetime. Through presentations, walk-in advising, private appointments, online resources, and the 3 credit hour Foundations of Money Education course, the ME Center teaches Aggies about budgeting, saving and banking, building credit, investing, buying a car and home, and more.

When should my student make an appointment with the Money Education Center? (freshman year, right before graduation, etc.)

The ME Center assists students with a variety of financial decisions they face during and after college. For instance, Freshmen might schedule an appointment to learn how to budget their money in a way that allows them to afford college through graduation while minimizing their student loan debt. Sophomores and Juniors might schedule an appointment to learn how to start building their credit. Seniors on the other hand, may want to schedule an appointment to learn about student loan repayment, car and home buying, or investing.

Spring Break 2018: March 12-16

January 29, 2018 by New Student and Family Programs

With Spring Break right around the corner, it is important to make sure your student is prepared for the week away from Aggieland. We hope these tips will help spark conversations with your student regarding their Spring Break plans so they can have fun and return to Aggieland safely!

Safety: It is important to all of us that your student returns to Aggieland safely. Websites such as www.safespringbreak.org are a great resource of safety tips for students as they travel. Some of these safety tips include:

  • If your student is planning to drive, make sure they wear their seatbelt and share the driving responsibilities.
  • When staying in a hotel, it is imperative your student use the safe in the room (if provided) to store all valuables. Always keep doors and windows locked and the shades drawn closed.
  • Get cash before leaving! Students should always have some cash on them in case of emergencies on the road.
  • Wear sunscreen! Encourage your student to wear at least SPF 15 and reapply often.

Staying Healthy When Stress Arrives

December 7, 2017 by New Student and Family Programs

Virus and flu season is upon us! With finals arriving soon, it’s especially important for students to take steps that will keep them healthy. Here are some practical tips to keep the immune system in shape so students can fight off seasonal health issues.

Get more sleep:

Many college students don’t get enough sleep. Adequate sleep helps the adrenal glands and the immune system recharge and fight infection and stress. Winter break is a great time to catch up on sleep, but the regular amount of sleep a student gets is more important. Encourage your student to be aware of their amount of sleep, even when they are busy studying for finals.

Lower sugar consumption:

It is well known that sugar consumption lowers immune system function.  Remember sugars also include carb-rich foods such as bread, cereal, white rice, pasta, cakes and cookies. Encourage students to focus on a diet high in proteins, vegetables and fruits of all types. Wash fresh fruits and veggies prior to consumption—you never know if they’ve been handled by someone who was sick.

Welcoming Students Home After Their First Semester

December 6, 2017 by New Student and Family Programs

Like many families whose students had recently begun their first year at A&M, I was anxious to see my son over the break and couldn’t wait to hear about how the fall went. I quickly found out that his number one priority was to catch up on sleep!

My son was a freshman members of the Corps of Cadets (or a fish, as they are most commonly known) and had a tremendously busy first semester. Whether or not students are members of the Corps, they often find their first semester is a nonstop current of activities, events, assignments and deadlines from the first day of the year until finals conclude. As excited as I was to have him home and visit with him between semesters, I realized rest was also a priority for my student during this rare down time.

Preparations Before Heading Home

December 6, 2017 by New Student and Family Programs

As the semester comes to a close, students will be leaving their residence halls, houses, and apartments for a few weeks to make an extended visit home. It’s crucial for students to secure their residence and belongings before leaving campus or the Bryan-College Station area. Below are a few compiled tips to ensure a safe and secure winter break:

  • Take valuable items (laptops, televisions, etc.) home with you or secure them in a safe, hidden location.
  • Write down or take pictures of valuable items’ serial numbers in case of theft.
  • Close and lock all windows and doors.
  • Unplug all electrical devices.
  • Take out all trash and dispose of any perishable food items.
  • Store and secure any items that are usually kept outside.
  • Discuss plans for winter break with roommate(s) and determine who is responsible for any tasks that must be completed before leaving.

Preparing for Final Exams

November 2, 2017 by New Student and Family Programs

Fall 2017 final exams take place Friday, December 8 and Monday, December 11 – Wednesday, December 13. Whether it’s your student’s first semester of finals or their last, we know it can be a stressful part of the year. Here are a few tips to help your student prepare:

A moderate level of stress before and during an exam is useful, as it helps a student perform at their peak. Too much stress, or test anxiety, can keep a student from being able to focus on the task at hand. If your student is feeling overwhelmed by upcoming final exams, encourage them to keep in mind these tips for overcoming test anxiety:

Before the Exam:

  • Manage your time well: get plenty of sleep, find time to exercise or be active, and schedule time to study.
  • Focus on healthy behaviors: eat regular meals, drink water and other non-alcoholic beverages, choose healthy snacks (excessive sugar can make you drowsy), limit caffeine – it increases anxiety.
  • Study in places with minimal distractions.
  • Condense notes into manageable study tools. Creating flashcards, vocabulary lists, or quick study guides are effective techniques for mastering a semester’s worth of notes.

A Family’s Challenges During the First Year

November 2, 2017 by New Student and Family Programs

During our daughter’s first semester at A&M, we didn’t anticipate the new struggles she would encounter as she transitioned into college life. She began facing challenges in areas that previously came easily to her. She had always performed well in school and wasn’t accustomed to spending much time studying. When college began, she found herself underperforming in her classes and unsure of how to respond. It was a new challenge both for her and us.

To be honest, her first semester was awful. Her grades reflected it. She didn’t have any studying or time management skills, and she didn’t know how tutoring worked. The end of a relationship with her boyfriend was just the icing on top. She was depressed, lost all confidence in herself, lost weight, and ended up on probation in her sorority because of her grades. These failures embarrassed and humiliated her. At times during her first semester, the prospect of a successful college career seemed out of reach.
